It was a rough day for the United States Of America yesterday. The US Women’s hockey team got out to a 2-0 lead on our beautiful Canadian angels, soundly outplayed them for a good 55 minutes, AND THEN LET IT ALL SLIP AWAY!
But I digress. Today is a new day, and Canada faces another tough challenge: figuring out a way to make the United States have a bad time TWO DAYS IN A ROW!
This rivalry obviously goes WAY BACK, all the way to the 1920 Olympic Summer games! Wait, what?? I’m not sure how things worked in the 20’s, but whatever, Canada won all of the gold and the US went home with, you guessed it, SILVER MEDALS!! You know, looking back it’s kind of surprising the US didn’t base their entire monetary system around silver, since they seem to have such a proclivity for it.
Things sat at a low simmer for decades, until 1991, when the Americans did all they could to try and beat the Canadians in the Canada Cup, and still wound up falling short. And of course by “did all they could” I mean “threw a cheap shot that took Wayne Gretzky out of the tournament“. It’s been a Hatfield and McCoys-esque blood feud ever since.
Although, I’m hesitant to call it a rivalry, since a rivalry usually involves both parties gaining and losing the upper hand. In this case it’s been ALL CANADA ALL THE TIME BABY (recent World Juniors excluded).
This game is not going to be a cake-walk, that’s for sure. This US team is one of the best that’s ever been assembled, and they basically moonwalked their way through the round-robin. It’s going to be a tough task, and I’m honestly nervous that the Canadians will not be up to it.
HAHAHAHA JUST KIDDING! IT’S GOING TO BE A BLOODBATH, AMIRIGHT 2010 GOLD MEDAL WINNING TEAM?
WHAT SAY YOU STACE??
